Alan Curtis Kay (born May 17, 1940) is an American computer scientist credited with founding object-oriented programming and shaping the modern graphical user interface (GUI). In 1968, Kay met Seymour Papert and learned of the Logo programming language, which introduced him to the work of Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner, Lev Vygotsky, and constructionist learning. That December, despite a high fever, he attended Douglas Engelbart's "Mother of All Demos" in San Francisco, calling it one of the greatest experiences of his life. In 1969, he became a visiting researcher at the Stanford AI Lab, expecting to accept a professorship at Carnegie Mellon. Instead, in 1970, he joined Xerox PARC, where he spent the decade developing networked workstation prototypes in Smalltalk.
